Recent years have seen a spike in the organic culture. Now more than ever, people are seeking out organic tags on their grocery store produce. While Lakeside Organic Gardens is just one of many farming organizations across the country, its history and philosophy in working with the environment has carved this manufacturer’s spot in the marketplace. Dick Peixoto, owner of Lakeside Organic Gardens, has what can only be described as a mutual respect with his land.
“Dick personally walks his fields daily to guarantee our 45-plus organic vegetables are held to the highest quality and food safety standards,” says Lindsey Roberts of Lakeside Organic Gardens’ marketing communications department. “When posed with a challenge in the field, we don’t have the same tools as conventional farmers. We choose to work with Mother Nature to aid us in our troubles.”
As Peixoto explains, “We farm the soil and the soil grows the crops.”
This method has served the Lakeside Organic Gardens farms well for years. Peixoto is a farmer whose deep-rooted love for farming began by spending every spare minute of free time as a child learning from his dad on their Watsonville, CA farm.
“Lakeside Organic Gardens takes pride in growing a wide offering of organic produce on family-owned and operated farms in California,” Roberts says. “Partnering with [us] is like having your own local farm, anywhere in the United States.”
Lakeside Organic Gardens dispenses to grocery stores, distributors and processors. Additionally, they personally deliver to grocery stores and restaurants along their local route, which includes the Bay Area. Roberts credits part of the company’s success to consistency. Their farms are entirely organic all the time.
“Though we’re considered a small [grower and shipper], we’re respected for our consistent quality, year-round availability and wide range of organic vegetable offerings,” Roberts says.
The Lakeside Organic Gardens offers the best by knowing their crops. Farmers here know exactly what it takes to yield the best crop with the finest flavor. When harvesting their now popular ? and difficult to grow organically ? Brussels sprouts, they work closely with seed producers to get the best varieties in their area.
“Eating all the parts of a plant is gaining popularity,” Roberts says. “Many people steam the spinach stem and roots with onion and herbs.”
Lakeside Organic Gardens is now introducing a new vegetable to the grocery scene, something they’ve wanted to do for years. Broccoli Leaf is new to many grocery stores and Roberts says they have been harvesting it for years, but the public wasn’t ready to welcome it to their dinner tables just yet. Now, it’s being welcomed with open arms.
“Some argue it’s even more nutritious than kale,” Roberts says. “It’s always been considered a bi-product of [growing and harvesting] broccoli. They’re delicious, earthy and resemble broccoli just enough to remind you where they came from.”
In the spirit of nutrition, Lakeside Organic Gardens farms spreads the wealth by donating upwards of 300,000 pounds of fresh produce every year. These donations go to neighborhood festivals, local organizations, food banks and schools.
“We believe in investing locally to help improve the quality of life in our community and support resources for youth and their families to live a healthy and active lifestyle,” Roberts says.
For the Lakeside Organic Gardens family, providing organic produce to the community ? and the country ? has become more of a lifestyle than a career choice. The company website ensures that they are “committed to growing 100% organic produce because [they] believe it’s the right thing to do.”
